Report on a Recent P2P Team Trip to Ethiopia

Enawgaw Mehari, M.D.

Founder and President

People to People, Inc.

Mathiwos Wondu Ye-Ethiopia Cancer Society, Ministry of Health , Black Lion Hospital faculty of Medicine and People to People  celebrated World  Cancer Day on February 4 th,2019 at Intercontinental Hotel. Cancer is a leading cause of death around the world. It has been noted that more people die in the world in cancer than HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and malaria combined. Studies show the greatest impact of cancer is in low income countries, like Ethiopia. The Charter of Paris designated February 4 each year as World cancer day. The goal is to increase awareness of cancer and provide unbiased information to the people how to prevent, detect and treat. Risk modification is part of the preventive measures of cancer. It is cheap and more effective than actual cancer treatment. Most patients show up to the doctor for the first time at stage IV, which is already metastasized. The truth is most types of cancers are curable if detected early and managed properly. The primary goal of the World Cancer day is to significantly reduce illness and death caused by cancer. In Ethiopia there is massive misconception, stigma, misconception and lack of infrastructure to diagnose and treat cancer. The country does not have comprehensive cancer care center.

People to people, Mathiwos Wondu and BLH team up together to help establish state of the art cancer center at Black Lion Hospital with man power training in the form of fellowship. It is a hospital historically established by the contribution of the Ethiopian people. We believe this generation can do the same and find our own indigenous solution instead of waiting for others to come and do it. It is a symbol of pride when Ethiopians get their treatment there at home, families at their side by doctors who understands their language and culture. People to People delegates comprised 10 experts led by Dr. Kebede Begna from Mayo Clinic, a world class expert in hematology- oncology and Dr. Anteneh Habte from Virginia top expert in Palliative Care. Dr. Electron Kebebew a distinguished professor from Stanford university was the keynote speaker on various topics of the cancer including research and diagnosis. Dr.Dimitri gave a grand round lecture at Black Lion Faculty of Medicine about imaging and mammogram. Whether mammogram is needed in Ethiopia generated a heated debate among the participants and experts in the field. Dr. Enawgaw Mehari, besides participating at the World Cancer day also visited Bahir Dar University and Debre Markos University (DMU). He gave a lecture about Ethiopian Medical History at DMU. He argues the medical history of the country needs to be incorporated in the medical education curriculum. A manual has been published by p2p and distributed to many universities in the country including Ministry of health.
